Endurance has signed a letter to members of Congress to urge the passing of a clean Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) reform bill this year. Endurance joins many other large Internet and technology companies in support of ECPA reform, which would provide equal protection for personal communications stored in the cloud.
“Endurance is a provider of cloud based services for thousands of small businesses all over the world through our Bluehost, HostGator and iPage brands, and we take privacy very seriously,” said Endurance CEO Hari Ravichandran. “Many businesses today depend on the cloud to operate, so it is critical that data stored in the cloud be protected to the same extent as data stored locally. The existing ECPA law was passed in 1986, and needs to be updated to reflect current communication needs.”
Endurance is advocating for ECPA reform to require a search warrant for government access to customer data stored on the cloud by third party service providers without exceptions for regulatory agencies. ECPA reform is crucial not only to protect privacy rights but also to support entrepreneurial opportunities online.
